Writers Guidelines

Obviously, your spelling, grammar, and formatting must be flawless. Beyond that general rule, here are some specific pointers for issues of formatting, punctuation, etc.:

  • Use MLA standards for addressing texts — italics for book/film/album titles, quotation marks for song/story/poem titles, etc.
  • Make sure proper diacritical marks are used where necessary (i.e. Cecilia Vicuña not Cecilia Vicuna, Münster not Munster). You can either cut-and-paste these in or find the proper html codes for them. There are also keyboard shortcuts as well, depending on your operating system.
  • Make sure you properly use em and en-dashes where needed.
  • Certain "smart" punctuation doesn't play nice with Blogger: ampersands (&) in particular. You might encounter issues with smart (or curly) quotes (and asterisks) as well. I'd recommend avoiding them, but at the very least be consistent with your quotation marks.
  • Quotations that exceed four lines should be properly blockquoted using the "quote" button.
  • Use numbered or bulleted lists when appropriate (again, using the buttons in the toolbar).
  • Use in-line hyperlinks for citations when possible. When not referring to an online source, use MLA-style citation, ideally with a signal phrase. You should include a works cited list for each post.
  • Images should have informative captions ideally crediting their sources.

Finally, pesentation and text formatting should be consistent with the blog's defaults. Imported formatting (i.e. typeface, text size, background color, spacing, etc.) should be removed (using the "remove formatting" button).
